Does iCloud keep a copy of the files I upload to it on my Computer? I just upgraded to iCloud so I can free up space on my computer, so I wanted to know do the files I uploaded stay on my computer, which would defeat the purpose of freeing up space? Or are they transfeered to iCloud Drive for access and I can download later?

They will be off loaded to conserve space. So long as you have enabled the specific option for doing so. Check the iCloud preferences > iCloud Drive > options > * make sure "Optimize Mac Storage" is checked.

The ones that are removed from the Mac will have download icons next to them. A cloud with a downward facing arrow. If no icon the file is local. If you have a cloud with an upwards icon its uploading to iCloud.
UPDATE!! iCloud DOES transfer file to iCloud Drive and I started to see to "download icon" next to files, and I'm seeing more free spce, so it worked! thank you!!
Well I just put my files in iCloud and let it do its thing. Those I seldom access are off loaded. While ones I access often are kept local. I don't miss true keep all your files in the cloud, providers any longer.

What if I don't want them stored on my mac, but just in icloud and then download when needed? I'm trying to free up space.
I don't think that's an option. I have never seen it. 😟
So I guess it really doesn't free up space then? 😕 I was really hoping it would since that was the only reason why I purchased it.
