My iPhone 5C shuts down suddenly despite having anything up to 80% charge in the battery. I noticed last winter that it happened if it got very cold. Now it is happening even when it is warm.
If I plug in the charger then I can re-start it after a few minutes.
Any advice would be most welcome. C.W.

I don't know how's the battery health status of your iP5c, but be aware that, when batteries are reaching the critical point of their life, often they have unespected or unpredictable behaviors.
It never happened to my devices, but, just to try and explain your problem using my experience here in this forum, often dying batteries can act in a weird way (unfortunately sometimes they also completeley die without giving you the time to make a backup, and that's why I always tell users to create a backup of their data on a regular basis, at least twice a week).
So, my suggestion is to have your iP5c inspected as soon as possible.

The phone does charge to 100%. The problem is that after it has been used for a while it suddenly shuts down. If I try to restart it it shows a battery empty symbol, but if I plug it into a charger then within seconds it is showing 70-80%, so it clearly had not been empty.
On iPhone 6 there was a known battery problem and Apple were exchanging the batteries. This is an iPhone 5C.
