Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

I am using the bundled USB-C cable and a DP to USB-C. When I enabled the PBP it automatically gave me the highest resolution. I have it set to Default for Display, the scaled is only checked to show the resolution.

I tried to speak to Apple but they gave the usual runaround of trying to reset SMC etc. When i mentioned that the display worked just fine when using Boot camp to Windows he said check with Dell that it is not a Windows compatible display only and it works with the MAC. Sometimes they can be so inflexible.

I got my dell U4919DW in last week and the setup works perfectly with my 2018 MBP 15”. I even use it with a hedge dock for quicker plug and play. Make no difference to the dell monitor if you use it with the dock or without. I used the usb-c cable that came with it and if you plug a speaker into the usb of the monitor you get audio.

Also interesting to note is I tried to plug my apple tv 4k into the hdmi port and it worked but was too wide to be usable. Will continue to explore this out.

This id the dock I got from henge docks

A little off topic but hopefully someone here might be able to help given the circumstances, failing that maybe someone can confirm if I'm going mad or if I need to speak to support. I've got my U4919DW plugged into a Mac Mini 2018. I have endless issues in relation to sleep and wake up. I have to restart the Mini a couple of times a week because it won't wake and the monitor never goes to sleep properly no matter what I do. when the Mini sleeps I get the message shown below, the display never sleeps properly. I've changed numerous settings to no avail. As for the wake up I've tried USB connected keyboards, mice, unplugging peripherals, nothing wakes it.

Is anyone else having similar problems? I've got a USB-C cable to the monitor as well an a HDMI cable and I'm using the monitor in PBP mode.

Ok ok ok, I got some news.

I basically went on elemination round excluding stuff and eventually came to the following conclusion:

When I put the integrated USB of my 499P9H into USB3.0 mode, then I'm limited to 5120x1440x30hz.

When I put the integrated USB into 2.0 mode, then I can select up to 70hz!

This is all on my Macbook Pro 15" (2017) model. Using the included USB-C cable, Macbook is in clamshell mode.

Hi, could you any one tell me if it's normal that Apple shows that the resolution is 3840*1080 on my LG 49WL95C monitor, although I have set the resolution to 5120 * 1440 on SwitchResX at my laptop Macbook Pro 2019 15 inches? My monitor supports

5120*1440, but I am confused that why the info. from the apple icon does not displays this level of the resolution.

Thanks for any comments/help in advance.

I have 13" Macbook Pro Early 2015 model. In PBP mode, the section connected to MiniDisplayPort1 or HDMI (left side of picture shown below) is always showing shrunk in size i.e. not full size.

Section connected to MiniDisplayPort2 (right side of picture shown below) is showing proper size. I have tried connecting MiniDisplayPort 1 to HDMI and DP on monitor but no luck.

I tried connecting MiniDisplayPort1 and HDMI port to another Samsung 27" 1440 monitor and it works fine. Looks like issue is with Dell monitor only.

Anyone faced this problem?

Pinkie promise it's working just fine with bootcamp :-)

Macbook Mini 2018, U4919DW - Fresh install of windows 10 on bootcamp (10 mins ago to show this). USB-C to USB-C.

Despite my photos, the screen is crystal clear. Not like the blurry scaled screen on OSX.

The hardware of the Mac Mini 2018 works just fine with the 49" Dell, OSX is lacking.

Hi joevt,

the Dell is connected to the left port of the two available ones on the left side. So the one thats closest to the MacBook Air display.

I'll send you the Diagnose in a few minutes. At the moment I installed and booted Windows again to show you the GPU-Z Output.

And the output of the Dell info menu:

Under MacOS.

Under Windows. And I am able to set different resolutions and refresh rates in the Intel GPU Settings.
