Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

Connecting your external display to an External Dock device, and Driving the display from a port on the Dock, may or may not work, depending on exactly how the Dock produces its signals for displays. Some Docks produce display signals on some of their ports directly, some use software-based solutions to "fake" the display connection.

On the second point, we would not expect HDMI connections to work at these high resolutions. HDMI was invented for consumer TV sets. Running a device this large is very difficult to accomplish over HDMI, DVI, VGA, or other interfaces. But it should work over a direct DisplayPort or Thunderbolt or USB-C cable, PROVIDED you do not interpose any other devices or Docks.

Apple enabled single cable greater than 4096 width support in Big Sur for Intel Kabylake and Coffee Lake CPUs when the display has an EDID with a timing that has a width greater than 4096. Apple did not make the fix for Skylake CPUs so it won't work with your 2016 MacBook Pro. But it should work for the newer Macs.

Wanted to add that I got a new MBP over the weekend (non-Apple Chip - 13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports). It recognized the Dell monitor just fine and is running 60 Hertz.

No roses without thornes: When option-clicking "Scaled", I don't get the 5K2K resolution as an option. The list caps out at 4608 x 1944 although the monitor actually runs the higher resolution; which I set using Resolutionator.

Welp, it seems the new 10.15.7 2021-002 update has officially killed the ability to use an external display using USB-C to DP. Prior to the update, I was using my Monoprice UW 5120x1440 monitor in PbP mode, with one input over USB-C to DP and the other over HDMI. This was my workaround to utilizing this monitor since I couldn't push the full resolution but now it seems it doesn't work at all anymore. I can still use the HDMI input, but the DP input has completely stopped working.

I've been having a similar issue with my 2019 MBP scaling correctly to a 34 inch widescreen monitor. I've read through this thread and it seems to be an issue with the Intel Iris graphics card BUT I did stumble upon this:

He recommends an 8k bidirectional USBC to DP wire for full resolution. I ordered and will try.

So I recently got a 2020 13" MacBook Pro (i7; 32GB; 1TB; Intel Iris Plus). I am running the following:

ProductName: Mac OS X

ProductVersion: 10.15.7

BuildVersion: 19H1217

Using a Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort cable combined with Resolutionator, I have found success in achieving the elusive 5120x1440p@120hz resolution!! It's quite amazing and buttery smooth!
