Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

I think you should be using the DisplayPort input, based on this item under specs:

Scanning Frequency

DP1.4 : 5120x1440@60Hz (FRC)

HDMI2.0/USB-C : 3840x1080@60Hz (FRC) 2560x1440@60Hz (FRC)

To me, that says you only get the highest resolution over ONE input using DisplayPort 1.4 input.

Apple sells such a cable, rated for 5K

I just got a Samsung CRG9 - a 49" display supposed to run at 5120 x 1440. The resolution I am getting is close 1980 x 1080.

Am running an MBP 13" 2017 with 16GB memory, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB on OS X Big Sur. So none of what works for you both, works for me.

Text on the new display is looking squished, no matter what I do. I have tried out SwitchRes X. Don't know whow to make it work!

I have also ordered out an M1 mac! Totally at sea. ANy help would be appreciated.

Thanks Grant. Just made SwitchResX work it at 3380 x 1080 @30 Hz. So text is no longer distorted, though I am not getting the higher resolution. The screen now is gorgeously wide. Its clarity is the same as the earlier 27" display.

If I create a configuration of 5120 x 1440, at even 20Hz, the OS/driver simply doesn't accept. Will keep trying.

This screen of the CRG9 is capable of 100Hz refresh at 5120 x 1440. Will my M1 MBP 13" which is on its way help? As of now, SwitchResX does not support M1 Macs. So don't know what I will do with the new Mac. I will surely try with a USB-C to DP cable (instead of USB-C to HDMI). Is there a possibility that just the cable change will enable the Mac to work at higher resolutions?

One more query - does the M1 MBP 13" support 2 external displays? Then I may even prefer to have 2 x 32" 4K displays, which have a much sharper image. (But wont be the same as 1 curved display which is so blatantly easier on the eye. Many have doubts on that. My Belkin adapter has a DP and a USB C, which can connect to 2 displays, leaving 1 port on the MBP free.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

just wanted to add that this is an issue with DELL U4021QW as well. While 60 Hertz is an option on my 2018 13" MBP, the display blanks when choosing it. The display works fine at 5120x2160 30 hertz.

The PItA is that the MacBook Pro defaults to 60 Hertz when closing the lid. As such, I need to leave the MacBook Pro open all the time.

I'm tried going through a Caldigit docking station, and also tried a DisplayPort cable - both to no avail.

Please let me know if you hear of a fix, or if you know of a way to limit the output to 30 hertz (eliminate 60 Hertz as an option).

Thank you,

John

Welp, it seems the new 10.15.7 2021-002 update has officially killed the ability to use an external display using USB-C to DP. Prior to the update, I was using my Monoprice UW 5120x1440 monitor in PbP mode, with one input over USB-C to DP and the other over HDMI. This was my workaround to utilizing this monitor since I couldn't push the full resolution but now it seems it doesn't work at all anymore. I can still use the HDMI input, but the DP input has completely stopped working.
