Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

Thanks JeanLuc7. I realized after I made my original post I could test it out myself. As you posted that, I was testing PbP on a 27in LG display I already have. I currently have my 2019 13" MacBook Pro with Intel Graphics connected with 1 USB C cable and 1 Apple USB C > HDMI adapter + an Amazon HDMI cable.

  1. I had a slight difference in color between the two monitors. (See in the video below) They both had the LG monitor's color profile. I didn't try to calibrate or fix.
  2. When scrolling, I noticed some "tearing" where each page scrolled at a different speed. https://youtu.be/YNGpsfc83B4
  3. As you mentioned there are two options: by default apps can only be on one screen, but going full screen only affects 1 app. If you disable "Displays have separate Spaces", apps can be on multiple screens, but going full screen "blacks out" the other screens. This is weird that you have to choose. On Windows, you have the best of both worlds without needing a setting. Apps can be between windows. Going full screen takes over only the monitor your app is mostly on. Back to Mac, I think maximizing instead of true full screen works for most apps. However it's annoying that Windows has best of both worlds, where as Mac forces you to choose. You also need to log out/in to change the setting.
  4. I had a small bug where System Prefs would not let me drag the menu bar until I reverted to the original arrangement of the monitor. I was able to move the menu bar first THEN arrange the monitors.
  5. The login screen is on one monitor. Again, minor quibble.
  6. The default photo wallpaper makes the gap apparent - might want a flat color wallpaper.

I think I would keep the"Displays have separate Spaces" off and just maximize apps instead of proper full screen. Do you keep "Displays have separate Spaces" on or off?

Have you noticed the different colors and tearing when scrolling? That would probably be most annoying.

It looks like System Information.app in Big Sur has not improved on the set of info it reports. It's still basically useless because it does not show output resolution or output pixel format or output color space.

Your AGDCDiagnose output from Big Sur is very similar to the last version you sent from the previous macOS version. I forgot that AGDCDiagnose does not include output resolution size for Intel graphics (unlike AMD graphics) so there's nothing there we can use as sufficient evidence. We need a screenshot of the timing info from SwitchResX in the Current Resolutions tab (double click the resolution to see the timing info), or output from the command

log stream --style compact --debug --predicate 'message contains "5120x1440"'

showing 5120x1440 timing (not scaled) succeeded.

SwitchResX works in Big Sur but there are some minor issues:

  • the menu icon sometimes gets drawn in the middle of the screen - click it to restore its position to the menu bar
  • the radio button in the Current Resolutions list does not always point at the current resolution - use the menubar instead
  • the Custom Resolutions status is not always updated after an Activate - turn off or disconnect display, then turn on or reconnect

I did try adding a 5120x1440 60Hz CVT-RB timing on my Mac mini 2018 (Intel UHD Graphics 630). It works for my DisplayPort display when connected to AMD RX 580 but not Intel.

I tried looking at CoreDisplay.framework for strings that might be new preferences but the code for frameworks is not in the usual place. https://lapcatsoftware.com/articles/bigsur.html

Hi guys,

I'm was also experiencing the cap at 3840x1080, fixed now and story below:

I bought the Dell U4919DW (49" ultra wide) about 2 weeks ago and have been using it for work and gaming (both Windows boxes) and attempted to plug my MacBook Pro 2017 in for the first time last week. I have been working on this on and off for the better part of a week trying all sorts of different solutions.

  • EDID modification for RGB fix (made a noticeable difference in color, at least)
  • Fresh install of Catalina
  • Upgraded to Big Sur Beta

Nothing seemed to work. I contacted Apple and the resources said that I should try contacting Dell, downgrade back to Catalina, blah blah blah.

HOWEVER, while I was on the phone with support I was digging around in System Report and found that all of my Thunderbolt 3 ports reported no devices connected to them... strange since I had the USB-C Thunderbolt 3 plugged into my top right port. I plugged it into the top left port, lo and behold it started working at native resolution. I'm not really sure what the issue is with my other port, but even now when I go back to that port it caps the resolution at 3840x1080.

I saw there was a lot of discussions around the cord being used with the monitor being the issue. I am using the provided USB-C Thunderbolt 3 cord that came with the Dell monitor for both power and display. I did decided to stay on Big Sur Beta, so I haven't tried this again on Catalina. Try a different port I guess? I think this whole thing is a stupid issue and the replies I have been reading hit the nail right on the head, Windows has had no issues with this display and I have had nothing BUT issues with my MacBook. Very backwards.

Hi all

I took this up again (3840 x 1080 as max resolution on the 49" wide screens) with Apple (hours of discussions). We all now the limitations (if you read this treat): not possible to go to 5120 x 1440 solution on Intel graphic cards - only AMD or M1. Apple engineers know the problem. And again: It works on Boot Camp AND 5120 x 2880 works aswell (so the LG Ultrafine 5K)

Do they know about the issue? YES (this is internally documented!).

Will they solve it? NO!

Do they care? NO!

Does pride come before the fall? YES!

So summary for all: A 49" Ultrawide Monitor will never work on a MacBook Pro with a Intel Graphic Card (on MacOS). You need an AMD or M1 in order to receive full resolution. No cable or any software will help you to solve that. Its a MacOS (software) issue.

Solution options:

  1. Use Boot Camp
  2. Buy a new MacBook (Pro) M1
  3. Buy a used MacBook Pro with AMD
  4. Use 3840 x 1080 as the solution

UPDATE:

I am using a MacBook Pro 13 (late 2016), MacBook Pro 13 (2018) and MacBook Air (2019). All devices on BigSur 11.2.1

The same problem here.

2017 Macbook Pro, 13in, Touchbar, i5 3.1GHz.

I started with High Sierra. Mac sees a U4919DW, supports 5120x1440, but when I connect Type C cable, monitor is all black. Closing laptop does not change anything. My Type C cable works fine on this monitor and RTX 2080 with full resolution at 60Hz, 8bpc, which matches specs of this monitor. I tried Type C cable that came with monitor, same situation. Type C cable came wtih laptop, does not even recoganize monitor, only charging. Type C to HDMI adapter then HDMI cable to monitor, no full resolution. 3840x1080 is always available and working, but that is not the purpose for this monitor.

I read half way through this thread, and someone metioned 10.14.2 beta. I upgraded to Mojave, and then to 10.14.2. Now Mac does not even see 5120x1440 as supported resolution. I can still use picture by picture mode, but that is still not the purpose of this monitor. I do not believe Dell is to blame. Full resolution via Type C cable is supported on my PC. Someone mentioned full resolution works from bootcamp windows. That leaves 1 option: Apple does not support this resolution, even in 10.14.2.

I have been spending days/nights with MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) to get it running with a single usb-c cable at full screen 5120x2880, no luck as everybody else.

I just give up and have following solution that works for me;

Left USB-c to Dell USB-c

Left USB-c with HDMI adapter to Dell HDMI

PBP on

I keep MacBook lid open so I have like communication screen over Skype, iMessage etc. and can still use keyboard and touch pad without extra stuff on my table.

See the overview picture + arrangement ss and let me know if you have any question or suggestion.

Hi Don,

What I did was set it up as 2 monitors, but then enabled extended desktop, so it actually acts as a single monitor.

And truth be told, I am actually liking it more this way. First, it works perfectly with Magnet (A kind of manager I use when I have many windows open at the same time). More importantly though, I works really well with Skype like this when I have to share my screen via skype to clients.

When sharing my ultra-wide screen to clients who are on 16:9, what they ended up seeing was a long skinny view of my monitor that was impossible to read. Now by sharing 1 of the, lets call them "virtual" monitors via Skype, they can see my screen properly. This is important for me because I depend on Skype and other screen sharing methods to demonstrate our software to potential clients.

As for color differences, I set the color profile to the same for both "screens" and it works perfectly - no color difference at all.

Anyway I agree with you that it SHOULD WORK because its what Apple and Dell promise, but even if they did release a software update now, I might just stay with my current arrangement anyway.

Regardless of this: This monitor is freakin' gorgeous, and the Mac Mini is performing really well. The combo is super elegant, runs very cool, and really cleans up my desk. I highly recommend this combo even with the glitch as the world around is convenient in my opinion.
