Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

I think you should be using the DisplayPort input, based on this item under specs:

Scanning Frequency

DP1.4 : 5120x1440@60Hz (FRC)

HDMI2.0/USB-C : 3840x1080@60Hz (FRC) 2560x1440@60Hz (FRC)

To me, that says you only get the highest resolution over ONE input using DisplayPort 1.4 input.

Apple sells such a cable, rated for 5K

Hi all

I took this up again (3840 x 1080 as max resolution on the 49" wide screens) with Apple (hours of discussions). We all now the limitations (if you read this treat): not possible to go to 5120 x 1440 solution on Intel graphic cards - only AMD or M1. Apple engineers know the problem. And again: It works on Boot Camp AND 5120 x 2880 works aswell (so the LG Ultrafine 5K)

Do they know about the issue? YES (this is internally documented!).

Will they solve it? NO!

Do they care? NO!

Does pride come before the fall? YES!

So summary for all: A 49" Ultrawide Monitor will never work on a MacBook Pro with a Intel Graphic Card (on MacOS). You need an AMD or M1 in order to receive full resolution. No cable or any software will help you to solve that. Its a MacOS (software) issue.

Solution options:

  1. Use Boot Camp
  2. Buy a new MacBook (Pro) M1
  3. Buy a used MacBook Pro with AMD
  4. Use 3840 x 1080 as the solution

UPDATE:

I am using a MacBook Pro 13 (late 2016), MacBook Pro 13 (2018) and MacBook Air (2019). All devices on BigSur 11.2.1

Of course. I am use 2 cables at the same time: 1 x USB-C cable, and 1 x HDMI cable, both of which come with the Dell Monitor.

To me this suggests that the problem is sitting somewhere in Mojave. We know the monitor works when connected to a PC, and we know the Mac Mini hardware drives the monitor at full res, and we know it works in "dual monitor / expanded desktop" mode like I have it setup. Some bit of code somewhere in Mojave is somehow not recognizing the monitor's native resolution, and it's just defaulting to 3840x1080. Let's go Apple!

Thanks for the updated information on what Macs and what MacOS.

Based on other Users experience, we would not expect your 2016 model to be able to support wider than 4096 pixels on one cable.

But if you are NOT cluttering up the experiment by inserting a dock, and ARE using a direct DisplayPort cable (or its cousins ThunderBolt-display or ISB-C-display) that WOULD be expected to work.

Connecting your external display to an External Dock device, and Driving the display from a port on the Dock, may or may not work, depending on exactly how the Dock produces its signals for displays. Some Docks produce display signals on some of their ports directly, some use software-based solutions to "fake" the display connection.

On the second point, we would not expect HDMI connections to work at these high resolutions. HDMI was invented for consumer TV sets. Running a device this large is very difficult to accomplish over HDMI, DVI, VGA, or other interfaces. But it should work over a direct DisplayPort or Thunderbolt or USB-C cable, PROVIDED you do not interpose any other devices or Docks.

So, the Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable didn't work .... in fact nothing displayed on the monitor at all!

I suspect that as the monitor only supports USB-C and not Thunderbolt 3 - it didn't detect the signal from the Mac.

I'm waiting on a Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort cable to arrive this evening too, I suspect this will finally solve the issue so I will update again once that arrives!

according to Dell's information, the USB-C input is the "poor cousin" of the other inputs:

Input Connectors

2 x HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2) (10-bit color @ 60Hz)
1 x DP 1.4 (HDCP 2.2) (10-bit color @ 60Hz)
5 x USB 3.0 Downstream port
2 x USB 3.0 Upstream port
1 x USB Type-C (Alternate mode with DP1.4, Power Delivery, and USB2.0) (8-bit color @ 60Hz)

note, for example it supports 8-bit color while the other inputs support 10 bit color.
