Time Machine Extremely Slow

Hi all, and thanks in advance,

My Time Machine backups run extremely slowly. I'm talking days. Sometimes they just completely stall and I abort them.

I'm backing up my 2013 27" iMac to a 3TB external drive connected by Thunderbolt-Firewire.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), macOS High Sierra (10.13.2)

I discovered the Time Machine problem. It's SETI@home. I stopped all SETI operations and Time Machine is running smoothly.

Try running First Aid on it with Disk Utility. It will take a long time to run due to the many aliases and hard links it uses.
