Did Apple in fact call me on my cell phone first and then at home, saying people from abroad were trying to break into my account?

FYI: Apple will only call if it's requested by you, not out of the blue.
Apple will never contact you in this way.
They would never called to alert you about break-ins on accounts etc. It is scam, it is phishing.
