iTunes won't sync with iPhone X

I bought a couple of albums from iTunes, and when I went to sync them to my iPhone X, all the songs wouldn't show up in the playlists. Sometimes only 3 songs showed up, sometimes none. I have iTunes 12.7.4.76 on my MacBook Pro mid-2010 -- is the computer too old? Does anyone know a solution to this?

iOS 12 requires iTunes 12.8 or better running on OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan or better.

See How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support to check if upgrading is feasible, if required.

If you can't/won't upgrade then a workaround for music is to use iTunes Match or Apple Music, and use iCloud for backup and data transfer.
