I not to long ago got my iPhone 8 but not until recently started to mess up when being in a call either in FaceTime or google hangouts whenever I’m in a call no mattet the duration when I lock my phone the call hangs up and It’s very annoying please if anyone has any suggestions please reply
If you press the lock button during a call then of course the call will be cancelled.
That's not an issue or a bug, it's designed to work that way.
If you want to check another apps during a call, you press the Home button (not the lock button) then open another app (contacts, mail, maps, etc...)

Was that ever a feature because I could with my old iPhone 7 with no issue if I’m no mistaken
As far as I can remember and certainly it is the same with an iPhone 7.
My iPhone 8 running on iOS 12.1 hangs up on calls when pressing the lock button
