Any common one, often MP3 or MP4. If you’re importing on a PC, don’t use WMA.

The format depends upon the quality you desire and where you are going to play it. Some formats are not supported on all hardware.


Compressed formats with minor quality loss - mp3, m4a (Mp4-audio) - also the smallest files


Compressed format with no quality loss - ALAC


No compression, full quality - AIFF or WAV.


Note: WMA files can only be played on PC based hardware, not iTunes for Mac. WAV files will not be as portable as other formats because metadata (titles, names, etc.) will not travel with the file.
