Why iCloud reports more space than expected?

iCloud says that iCloud Drive takes up 70.1GB of space:

User uploaded file

However, when I open the iCloud Drive folder on Finder and sum the sizes is 45.4 MB.

What is the reason for this? How can I free up more space in my iCloud Drive?

See these articles iCloud: If iCloud documents and data aren’t the same

Find and delete files on your Mac - Apple Support

In the finder - iCloud Drive it's an aggregate of folders you created in desktops and documents and in the location system preferences - iCloud - manage storage it will be different .

  • Documents: Contains files in your home folder that aren’t included in other categories, such as Pages documents and PDFs. It also includes videos and photos that are not managed by your photo library (for example, an image that a friend shares with you using AirDrop).
  • iCloud Drive: Contains all files stored in iCloud Drive. It may also contain files in your Desktop and Documents folders if you store them in iCloud Drive.

Hey lengxupa,

If I understand correctly, you want to know how to manage the storage space in iCloud. There are a couple things you can try that may be able to help. I would recommend you use this article to help troubleshoot the issue.

You can free up storage in iCloud by deleting content—like old iCloud Backups, photos, videos, files, mail, and text messages—that you're not using. Before you delete anything, you might want to archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud.

Thanks for your reply, MoonJ.

However, I've freed up almost all my storage and deleted almost all my files on iCloud Drive and it should only contains around 45.4 MB space but iCloud says that iCloud Drive still takes up 70.1GB of space as the figure showed at the beginning. I want to downgrade my iCloud storage plan therefore I almost deleted everything on iCloud Drive. But now it seems that iCloud reports more space than it should be and rejected my downgrade request. I'm a little bit confuse about that now.
