iPhone xs screen won’t lock

I just bought a new iPhone xs and the screen will not lock, its always unlocked. No passcode no Face ID required to unlock it. All software updates have been done. Phone is 1 day old. I’ve already turned off facial awareness but it didn’t help. How do I fix this?

Settings- display and brightness- autolock - set to something other than “never”

2 minutes, 5 minutes etc.
