I accidentally deleted some files and emptied the trash on my MacBook Pro running macOS High Sierra v 10.13.6.
I have searched online and found several options for software that claims to enable me to recover the files. Is there a way to recover the files without purchasing software, and if I must purchase software, is there a recommended program for this purpose? Thank you!

You have to purchase data recovery software to recover deleted files after emptying trash. I would like to recommend Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Mac and TestDisk. You can first go with the free version of the software to check if the deleted files are recoverable.
No. If you have not been backing up your files then the only way to recovery is with the file recovery software.
