Catch 22 on App Store - Want to upgrade but can't because I need to upgrade

I want to upgrade my iMac to El Capitan. I found the installer on the App Store. However, when I try to download, I cannot because I need to upgrade the App store before I can download.

Steps I followed:

Found El Capitan installer on the App store
Click Download
Sign into the App Store
Receive error message "Something has gone wrong"
Receive message "You must update your machine before you can use the App store" (or something close to that)

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

After several sessions on the phone with support with no success, I was able to sign on to the App store from a different Apple device and was able to set my payment information. I can now access the store from my "old" iMac.

Appreciate the quick response and the suggestions.

Problem solved for now!

Either sign into the App Store on another newer OS computer to verify your billing information or contact iTunes Support.

Either use the form or scroll to the bottom of the page in the 2nd link. Follow through the screens to get a chat or telephone option.

Thanks, I was wondering if signing on from a different machine would work. I have also submitted a question to support. Appreciate the suggestions and will update if either works out!
