Catch 22 on App Store - Want to upgrade but can't because I need to upgrade

I want to upgrade my iMac to El Capitan. I found the installer on the App Store. However, when I try to download, I cannot because I need to upgrade the App store before I can download.

Steps I followed:

  • Found El Capitan installer on the App store
  • Click Download
  • Sign into the App Store
  • Receive error message "Something has gone wrong"
  • Receive message "You must update your machine before you can use the App store" (or something close to that)

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

After several sessions on the phone with support with no success, I was able to sign on to the App store from a different Apple device and was able to set my payment information. I can now access the store from my "old" iMac.

Appreciate the quick response and the suggestions.

Problem solved for now!
