My 3rd gen ipad is at ios 9.3.5 and when I check for updates it says no updates available.
According to iOS 12 - Apple
the 3rd gen is compatible with IOS 12
so how can I update this ios 12 if it says its up to date? Also hooking it to a computer and using itunes to update, it also says it is up to date.

I don't see 3rd gen iPad on the snapshot. The 12.9 inch iPad Pro 3rd gen and the Mini 3rd gen are compatible but not the original 3rd gen iPad. If yours is the original 3rd gen iPad, iOS 9 is the latest compatible version.

I see, I certainly read that wrong then. It looked like 3rd generation was a separate entry.

That reads 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro 3rd generation.
If that iPad 3 never got software update notices for iOS 10 or 11, it is NOT going to run iOS 12, either.
