Macbook Air Not Filling LG Ultrawide Monitor

I am writing this question because I have found a solution that works for me, and the old, unanswered thread won't allow me to post my solution:

I am on a 13-inch 2017 MacBook Air

1.8 Ghz Intel Cor i5

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I hooked up my Macbook Air to the LG via thunderbolt 2.0 cable (this monitor has a thunderbolt 2.0 port in the back). I opened System Preferences --> Displays-->Clicked on Arrangement tab-->Selected the "Mirror Displays" Checkbox-->Clicked on the Display Tab clicked on the "Scaled" radio button and selected 3440 x 1440 resolution. The resolution of this monitor is 3440 x 1440, so it should have filled it completely when selecting it to this scale, but it did not fill it fully. It resulted in letterboxing on the left and right (see below).

I couldn't figure out why the 3440 x 1440 Macbook display option wasn't filling up a 3440 x 1440 monitor from edge to edge.

I found the solution by CLOSING THE DISPLAY ON THE MACBOOK AIR.

First, you have to go to System Preferences-->Energy Saver-->and check the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" box (if you don't have this checked, the external monitor will just go black when you close your laptop display. With this checked, I closed the laptop display and as soon as it was closed, the picture filled the full monitor from edge to edge.

It's not a perfect fix, because every time I open the laptop display again, it brings the black bars on each side back. But as long as I am mirroring the laptop, I don't even want it open, so this fix is sufficient for me! Hope it helps someone else!

It can't fill the display when mirroring the laptop displays because the displays have different shapes. Try it with mirroring off.
