Contacts updating on different phones with different Apple ID Accounts. ?!

We recently took my husbands old phone (iPhone 6) and gave it to our son to use for games and to iMessage us and other family members. It has no sim, no data/phone plan, only wifi use. I started and Apple ID for my son separate from my husbands. I signed him out and signed in my son with the new Apple ID (linked to my Apple ID under the family share ... husband not on family share) and then I updated my sons contacts so that he would only have us and his grandparents. I changed the name of the contacts that were our names to “mom, dad, grandma, Granda etc” and started to put pictures with them also. Now it updates the contacts on my husbands phone if I do that. I am so confused and do not know how to fix/change this. I have logged out of all iCloud/iMessage etc and back in on both phones. Restarted the phones etc. Any advice?

Something did not get set up right. You should properly erase the phone to prep it for your son to use:
