iPhone 4 with IOS7.1.2

my WhatsApp has expired and the new version 12 requires IOS 8. The articles that I have read says that I can still use it, but with limitations. When I open my App it has it has expired and I cannot get into my chats or anything. How do I get by that expired screen and continue to use my WhatsApp. Please help. Thanks Patti
