DuckDuckGo is a search engine, and the only one available that does not track your search history. If you don't want to use it just go to Settings/Safari and choose a search engine that tracks your every search and sells that information to advertisers, such as Google.
I don’t believe the Safari option takes up any device space, it’s just code that when selected points to that search option, because of that I’m not sure why you would wish to remove it if at all that was possible (which it isn’t).
Could you expand on your concern.

I sympathize. I don't want Google to appear as an option.
I don't want google **** either, I wish I could do on my phone what I did on my MacBook, totally removed all google, all flash, all java (oracle) and more....nice and private, super fast
And I use DuckDuckGo ever since Apple included it in a security update about 4 years ago.
If your mean the APP...Settings...General...iPhone Storage...Delete
If you mean the Browser...Settings ...Safari...Search Engine
I know how to switch back and forth between browsers in safari settings. What I want to do is totally remove it from my phone. So it isn’t even an option to switch to

No way to get rid of those options. Just don't select it if you don't want it.
