Garmin watch notifications limited by Apple?

I contacted Garmin because the only way to turn off notifications INDIVIDUALLY is to also turn them off on the phone. So there is no separation between the phone and the Garmin watch app "connect" in terms of selecting which apps you want to have show notifications. For instance, on my phone I have email, calls, text, news, weather alerts, other app alerts and for the watch I just want calls, text and maybe email. If I want that on the watch, I also have turn off the news, weather, and other apps on the phone.

Garmin stated that this limitation was set by Apple. (It does have this separate selection function on Android). Oddly, Fitbit which I was switching from had the capability to have selected apps show on my watch. Is this some ploy by Apple to make the Apple Watch a better option? Is Garmin misinforming me about the platform restriction?

At this point, I am thinking of switching not to the Apple Watch but to the Android! (And I have been using the iphone since day 1!!!)

iMac, iOS 7.1.2, also Macbook and iPad sharing use.
