why does MS word take so long to open

I have a late 2011 iMac, model 12, 2 with 8 GB RAM running OS Sierra 10.12.6. The only program I've installed other than stock is MS Office 2016. When I open an existing Word doc it takes nearly 45+ seconds to open so I'm curious if this is normal. Having run Etrecheck, it states my system is healthy with no issues and good performance. Can I assume this is due to Office not being a native Apple program? Thanks.

Word is pretty much a huge, bloated beast of a program.

If you have a mechanical hard drive, which you do, it's going to take time for it to load. That's normal. I experience the same thing on my 2011 iMac. It will load much much faster from an SSD (as will everything). Replacing your hard drive with an SSD will give you a significant performance boost on any disk based operations.

I've considered doing so myself, but since the 2011 iMac will not run Mojave, I'm opting to just live with it until I replace the machine, probably next fall.

I sort of figured this and like you, I don't see the need to invest in an SSD drive. I don't update Office 2016 since my system is stable running Sierra and the last time I tried it, Word developed a weird problem that took weeks to resolve. On the positive side, this machine has been very solid even if its not lightning fast 🙂

Thanks for the advice though I'll be honest in saying I like the Memory program since it allows me to manually release more RAM by the click of a button. And while adding more memory is always a good thing, I doesn't seem likely Word would open faster though it does close instantly with the 8 GB I have now. In fact all programs close without a hitch.

Uninstall Memory Cleaner. It's not needed and conflicts with the system's own memory management routines. To check your memory usage monitor the green graph in Activity Monitor's Memory window. As long as it's green there's no problem with memory.

My older Word 2008 was slow to load. It seemed to take forever loading fonts. However, just upped my RAM to 16 GB from 8 GB today and Word opens extremely fast. However, it still takes a while to close.
