itunes gift cards

I purchased iTunes gift cards for my nephews last year for Christmas. Unforeseen tragic circumstances happened, and gift giving couldn't occur. I would like give the cards this year, but don't know if there still valid or not. Is there a way to find out if it is expired w/o putting it into my account invalidating it as a gift. I also would prefer to give the cards as new w/o scratching them.
