I think you are trying to tap on the icon on the home screen, not in the control center. Go to a home screen and swipe down from the top right to get the control center. Then tap on the lock icon there.

if you open the control center by swiping down from the top right of the screen, is the lock there open or closed?
please post a screenshot. you can try going to settings>general>reset> and reset all settings too as an alternative.
Thanks all - that did the trick. I was in the Control Center BUT I was trying to tap the teeny icon in the upper right corner. How I missed seeing the BIG Button on the left had side is a mystery. 🙄

Yes - I see this (very, very) small icon that looks like a closed lock with a circular arrow around it. This icon is so small, though - sandwiched between the alarm clock icon and they battery percentage/battery icon - that trying to click on it alone is impossible.
Where can I find a Setting to change this to ‘unlocked’?

That’s the thing - I can’t’! The icon is truly microscopic. No matter how hard I try to tap it, the Control Panel simply disappears and I’m back to the reg home page.
I guess they missed the first part of my first comment. Thank you for helping and wording it in a way they understood.
Sometimes rewording a reply helps. And sometimes, it makes things worse. Trust me, I know because I have been guilty of that.
