Working an Ipod in an USB ready CD player

I got my ipod after i already purchased a CD player with a USB adapter. When i plug my Ipod into the radio it recognizes it but its too hard to select songs and playlists. It jumps from song to song and playlist to playlist. I have even tried setting the playlist i want before plugging it in, but it starts with the same song everytime. Is there an easier way to control my ipod instead of thru the radio or am i stuck using the radio controls?! It plays songs i didn't even think i had on my ipod!!!!

If someone can help me it would be greatly appreciated!!!
