Possible to display a standard (4:3) resolution on a widescreen monitor?

So I just got myself a mac pro and a non-apple 20" widescreen LCD. I'm very satisfied with both, and 99% of my software is ideally suited to the widescreen setup. However... I have some really old software (a couple games to be specific) that pre-date widescreen formats, and have no option to be run in a window either. They insist on running full screen at some ridiculously tiny resolution (640x480 I assume) which naturally causes the image to be stretched horizontally.

So my question: is there a way to force my mac to display in a standard aspect ratio, with black bars on the sides? If it's relevent, I have the radeon x1900 xt card.

Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sure, you just need to go to the "Displays" pane in the "System Preferences" choose a ridicules resolution (640X480, 800X600 or whatever) stretched or not (not for the black bars), and then launch your game.

If its cool, you can easily use the Automator application (under applications and very intuitive) to make a script that will change the resolution and then automatically run the game so you won't have to do it yourself every time.

If you need any help with Automator or can't see the low resolutions in Displays for some reason just write.

Have Fun, Baryo.
