App Store restrictions?

I went under the restrictions section and turned off App Store purchases. Now on the iPhone the App Store icon is gone. Does this mean I won’t get current app updates? Or just that I cannot download new application not already on my iPhone

You won't get anything that involves the App Store. No updates, no new purchases, no re-downloads etc...

You only get updates if they are set to Automatic. Otherwise you'll need to enable the App Store, to accept the updates.

I do have auto app updates turned on already for that phone, so I want my kid to still get updates for his apps, just don’t want him downloading certain apps.

Then you probably can get app updates. You can also limit what kinds of apps can be downloaded by age range, and also make it so your password is always required to download an app all without having to disable the App store entirely.
