16gb ram upgrade 15" 2009 Macbook Pro 2.8

Hey guys,

I have a 15" mid-2009 Macbook Pro 2.8, serial number is W89256AC644.

Apple says I can only upgrade the ram to 8gb, but I've read that at 2009 8gb was the highest you could buy + they are conservative with their ram upgrade suggestions. I also know from upgrading my previous computer that sometimes Apple is wrong.

Can I upgrade my laptop to 16gb of ram (8gb in each slot)? Has anyone done this, because I can't find any solid answers online. Thanks guys!

MacBook Pro, operating system 10.13.5 High Sierr

Standard RAM: 4 GB Maximum RAM: 8 GB

Details: 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free.

MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (SD) Specs (Mid-2009 15", MC118LL/A, MacBookPro5,4, A1286, 2324*): EveryMac.com

Some later models can use up to 16GB. but if the above is your model, it can only use up to a 4GB DIMM in each of its two slots.
