How do you evaluate RAM for quality?

I am ready to buy my new RAM for my PM G5, but was shocked at the cost of it from Apple. How do I properly evaluate it for quality?

Crucial (a company generally well regarded) offers a 1GB kit (2 X 512) for $99.

Apple offers the same for $200.

Both offer comparable guarantees.

What could make the Apple memory worth twice the cost? Is it silly to spend that much extra money when a decent company (Crucial) is selling it at 1/2 price?

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Crucial offers a 30 day guarantee on compability and limited lifetime, as does OWC. I also want to make sure I don't void out a waranty. If it says it's suitabllefor an Apple via OWC, Crucial, etc, is that goo denough? There's alot of opinion out there that Apple simply marks up alot. I just wanted to make sure of that before I purchase. It's smart to pay a little extra when you get something meaningful for it. But, it's stupid to pay twice the going rate for nothing.

Hi,
I am using several Macs (my own, starting from G3, G4, G5 and 2x iBooks) from a few years. I bought any additional RAM or Hard Disk from Apple. Why? I don't see any sense of buying those parts, because Apple doesn't manufacture them, in fact. So, I will not overpay.
For example, for my iBook I bought 512 MB RAM in a ordinary PC's shop. What's more! - in a part settlement I gave them back the mine 128 MB which I unmount from my iBook. So, I payed really small amount.
In my present G5, I have Kingston's 2x1 GB, and PQi 2x1 GB, which I bought in a company who sells Mac's and many other equipment and parts not only for Mac's. I bought them not in the same time, but everytime paying less than in Apple. Everything work fine, so iBook too.
Now I am thinking about adding to my G5 2x2 GB RAM more up to 8.5 GB.
I found in OWC really good price 435USD for 4GB and 209USD for 2x1GB plus shipping costs about 45 USD (to my country-Poland).
For me this is very attractive price, because in my country I would have to pay a lot more - 332 USD for 2x1 GB and 550 USD for 2x2GB (even not in Apple Store).
So, here is the conclusion - I am not rying to tell you that it is stupid to pay more than 2 times more - its your money and you can pay as much as you want, but with Hard Disks and RAM I think it has no sense.

Marek.
