Your a star, I have been trying for ages to find the answer to my flashing orange light on my ipod first generation and found your posting, tried the eject in itunes, and IT WORKS!!!!! I take it is now charging, do I have to do this every time I put it on charge if it is flashing or has that fixed the problem ?

    Hi
Just bought Shuffle Ver 2 from US. Won't charge,
won't play even though itunes tell me everything is
in sync. Most frustrating thing is the is no way of
knowing the IPod takes a charge other than the light
going green or turnig on & trying to play songs.
Feel like I've wasted my money.
What happens if I connect to another computr that
someone else uses their ITune account on.Will this
    affect my settings at all?

In your iTunes on your computer in Settings, UNcheck "Open Itunes when this iPos is attached" and click Apply.

That will alow you to try charging it on another computer without interference from iTunes...

OK I am confused about the charging thing.

SO am I to understand the following to charge:

    1.) Insert shuttle in deck
2.) Computer recognizes Shuttle and opens Itunes.
3.) Itunes indicates Ipod is synced ok to disconnect. At this point I have a solid yellow/orange light.

So at this point do I close iTunes and click on the USB icon in the taskbar and disconnect it? and then leave it to charge

or do I not disconnect via the USB icon and leave it alone?

and when it is playing, should the light blink green?

    I have SAME PROBLEM!!!

Since I have bought my 2nd Gen-Shuffle (2 months ago) it has fully charged to "GREEN" just once....
(even while left to charge for 8-10 hours)
It plays normally ...and for a good 10 hours or so, before re-charge.

    Should I leave "well-enough-alone"?
    Is this normal?
    Should I replace?

Actually, I'm not running 10.2.x and I haven't for years. My profile keeps defaulting to that for some reason...

Anyhow, I have followed every piece of advice I could find regarding this charging issue... and the darn thing just won't charge to green (after resetting it to factory defaults... leaving it plugged in for along time, etc.) and it dies after less than an hour of play.

So... did you take it back and how is the replacement working?

I have a related problem. My ipod shuffle gen 2 charges to blinking orange. When I click eject, I get a pop window that says, "The ipod can not be ejected because it has files in use by another application."

    Any ideas?

I'm very disappointed with this situation. This appears to be a BUG and Apple should provide a fix. I just bought a refurbished (go figure!) Gen2 1GB Shuffle, and I have been attempting to charge it for the past 4-5 hours, but I do not receive a green light. Here are my results:

On two machines which don't include iTunes, I get the continuous orange light and have no way of knowing if the unit is actually charging.

When I use a machine that has iTunes installed, the orange light blinks for approximately 10-15 seconds and then no light appears. I've tried different troubleshooting methods from ejecting the iPod from iTunes, rebooting my machine, restoring the unit to its original factory settings, and setting iTunes not to open automatically when the iPod is placed into the charger cradle, but none of those steps have resolved the issue. This is very frustrating.

The songs sync and load fine. I guess I'll see how long the battery lasts and try to live with the issue for now.

iPod: Proper charging procedures for Windows 2000

Please follow these steps to properly charge any iPod on a Windows 2000 system.

    1. Connect the iPod to the Windows 2000 computer.
    2. Select the iPod in the Source pane in iTunes.
    3. Click the Settings tab for the iPod.
    4. Click the check box for "Enable Disk Use" (you may need to scroll down to see this setting).
    5. Click Apply.

Note: You will need to manually eject the iPod when you're ready to disconnect it. Once "Enable Disk Use" is selected, the setting will stay and you do not have to perform these steps again. If Enable Disk Use is not selected, the iPod will not charge when connected to a computer with Windows 2000.

ok, my computer (windows) recognises that the shuffle is plugged in and says that it is synced etc. I charged it whilst doing some revision online and have also tried to charge it with my mains USB charger. It flashes orange whilst 'charging' and after 3 days of charging (yes 3 days- no exaggeration) the light turns green. YAY I say to myself so then i turn it on to listen to some music and no light. this means there is no charge right.

I have tried everything on here and nothing seems to work - why is this so difficult? - we shouldn't have these problems.
I understand that not every single product can be perfect, that's fair enough, but come on - how many people post their similar problems on here?? surely there is some solution.
The shuffle is for my Mum's birthday, we're going on holiday soon and would like the iPod to work by then. especially at the fact that it is a present.

Would appreciate any help or should I just take it back now??

Is your "mains USB charger" an Apple USB Power Adapter?
As far as I know the behavior of a shuffle plugged into
the Apple Power Adapter is to display a continuous steady orange LED until fully charged.

Take it back and try it on an Apple USB Power Adapter.

for this issue, i have meet it twice.
this tmie after i didn't use it for a long time, it suddenly no power before it stop and all lights turn off.
first , i conncet it to my computer with the USB cable ,it just sycn, but not charge.the orange light blink some secends then turn off,not that indicated in the manula for continouly blink when it was charged.
i change the mode and set the "use it as a remove disk"to enable,no help.
2 upgrade the itune softeware version,no help.
3 set the ipod shuffle setting to default mode when it was product,no hlep.
4 turn off the ipod shuffle for 30seconds and turn it on, no hlep.
5change another computer to charge. this computer use a WINDOWS XP software version, and USB2.0 setting. double check my computer setting up, i found my computer USB PORT was defaultly setting up to 1.0 version. i think that may the root cause for this issue.
