Pages shortcut for increasing font size not working

This question has been asked before, but tailed off without an answer:

My trusted shortcut to decrease font size (command minus) has stopped working or works only intermittently. I can increase it (command plus) and then decrease to the original size, but no further.

Frustrating as I work a lot with keyboard shortcuts. This has suddenly happened without obvious reason (i.e. I haven't upgraded Mac OS or Pages recently).

I definitely have the focus on the document, not the format panel.

In Pages v7.3 on High Sierra 10.13.6, the ⌘ + and ⌘ - keyboard shortcuts work correctly. Attempting to reduce the selected text smaller than its original default size (11 pt) works correctly. I did perceive a slight lag between the keystroke and result on a single page document. This lag could be magnified with large documents which Pages does not handle well.

You will need High Sierra or later to install Pages v7.3.

Thanks @VikingOSX! As I am not ready to upgrade to High Sierra because of certain compatibility issues with older software, this still leaves me in a bind and very puzzled why, without changing the system, an essential keyboard shortcut should suddenly not work anymore or inconsistently. I look forward to it all working again once I eventually upgrade.

Has anyone else encountered this issue and solved it without upgrading to High Sierra and Pages 7.3?
