took awhile to find... but "out of nowhere" (no such thing... clearly I accidentally caused it) my text entries started going in backwards... not the letters themselves, just showing up Right to Left.
With caps lock on, CTRL-SHIFT-left arrow (or right arrow) and that got me out of it.
I'm sure I was just slamming my keys too fast and hit this magical, seemingly-undocumented, shortcut.

a) after slogging thru 10 years of closed discussion board threads on the topic and only finding a single useful answer buried deep, I lost sight of the fact that my post would be out of context of all that.
b) if somebody has the problem, they'll find this fresh post with a short answer. if they have a keyboard, and they are in an Apple discussion, this applies. Probably the only thing I'd post differently would be to add different ways of phrasing the problem to make it easier to find

Which MacOS version are you using? Documentation of these shortcuts is hidden in the input source prefs for Arabic/Hebrew, and for 10.11 it's a little different than what you discovered:
