Until now, documents created with the Pages app on my iMac showed up in Finder windows with the same icon as the app itself--the familiar image of a pen superimposed over an orange-bannered document. Suddenly they started looking like generic icons for text documents. I used Get Info to see if the assigned icon had changed, but it has not. (See illustration.). What's happening here?

My guess would be that OS X/macOS has lost the ssociation of the icon with Pages. Try restarting the computer. If that's not successful, try starting up in Safe Mode:
menu > Restart
The computer will shut down, then restart.
As soon as you hear the startup chime, press and hold the shift key.
Keep the key pressed until you see the Apple logo AND a progress bar under it.
A safemode startup takes longer than a normal startup as it runs more diagnostic and repair routines that the usual set.
You will notice that video response is very slow in safe mode as well.
When the safe mode boot is completed, do a normal restart.
Any improvement?

The document icon is simply showing a preview of the document.
Something that you would Apple "Support" would know.

Open a Finder window on the folder where you keep your Pages documents. In that Finder window, click command+J to show the View options. Look for the checkbox labeled Show icon view, and uncheck it to show the familiar application icon instead of the plain text icon view. At the bottom of this View options panel, click Use as Defaults.
