Am I being charged for iTunes

I selected a free trial but I am convinced that apple has taken funds out of my account. Please can you explain why I have been charged for a trial

Apple might do an Authorization Hold to check if the card can be used for such subscription payments at all. After that clears, the ‘charge’ should be undone/reversed.

See your purchase history for any items that are actually billed to your Apple ID account, including subscriptions.
