Fault CR2: Kernel Panic that started with Sierra and persists even on Mojave

Hi guys, I never bothered to ever post this, but have been enjoying this kernel panics for ages - I think it started with Sierra, but it could be even as early as Yosemite. Nos sure if it is the OS X version, a software driver I have been dragging on all the way up to now, or maybe even a hardware issue(?) - hopefully we will manage to figure that out together 😕 😝 😁

Here is the latest kernel panic log from the past half an hour or so:

With all kernel panics, 3rd party kernel extensions are always a possibility. Many kernel extensions mess with things that change in the kernel and if the developer does not update the kernel extension, or the use does not install updated kernel extensions, they kernel panics can be triggered.

com.iospirit.driver.AppleIRController 4001
com.techsmith.TACC 1.0.3
com.iospirit.driver.rbiokithelper 1.33
com.iospirit.CandelairIRBaseDriver 1

If you can eliminate all of these until you either never get a panic again, or until the next panic occurs, you would have figured out that one of them either was at fault, or none of them were guilty.

Also check with the vendors to see if there are updates for these kernel extensions that are compatible with Mojave.

You have 3rd party RAM installed (Crucial). This is the number 2 common cause of kernel panics.

While Crucial is a well respected Mac RAM vendor, they still sometimes have RAM problems.

You can run Rember overnight from Safe mode to see if it can find any issues with your RAM

.

Quit as many apps and background tasks as you can (such as menu bar items) so more RAM is available for testing. Booting into Safe mode <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564> can also free up more RAM for testing, by not loading any 3rd party additions you may have installed.

Since the kernel backtrack

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.kec.pthread(1.0)[CBF1218B-EB4C-376B-8413-2BC1D9C24134]@0xffffff7fb00fe 000->0xffffff7fb0107fff

Is in an apple kernel module, I actually lean away from a 3rd party kernel extension, and more towards either RAM or a general hardware failure. NOTE: a 3rd party kernel extension could still corrupt some data structure that causes com.app.kec.pthread to generate the panic, so 3rd party kernel extensions are not totally off the hook.

Also if you have other kernal panic reports, looking at the "Panic" message, and the backtrace may show a consistent pattern, or something totally different each time. Both patterns can tell us something, or at least what to eliminate and what to focus on more.

As you can see analyzing a kernel panic is a bit of a guessing game based on previous experience.

On to your EtreCheck report

Battery: Health = Replace Soon - Cycle count = 1281

You may want to think about replacing your battery (unless you are "This Close" to getting a new Mac 🙂 )

I cannot see anything in the EtreCheck output to concern me.

Wow Bob, I'm humbled by the effort you have taken to respond to my issue 😮

Thanks so much, appreciate your time and input!

I definitely will try all your suggestions and report back - thank you!

P.S. I do have a new MacBook Pro 2018 which is being serviced in the upcoming week (a weird spontaneous issue that caused the screen to go black after 2 months of usage - I think they are replacing the motherboard)

So that the battery in this MacBook which basically is a backup computer, is not much of an issue 🙂

Fault CR2: Kernel Panic that started with Sierra and persists even on Mojave
