ipod appears to be corrupt

When i connect my iPod to my computer, after a while it comes up with the following message: "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting this iPod."
I try to disconnect and reconnect the iPod but the same message comes up again. So then i try to restore it but it comes up with the message: [ i]There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod. The requested resource was not found." After i click OK the screen returns to part where you can click to restore and nothing has happened. I try to restore again and again but the same message comes up. This problem means i cannot update the songs from iTunes onto my 20GB colour screen iPod.

I would very much appreciate some help as this problem has persisted for a long time now.

My 30 gb video did the same thing. I sent mine to Apple and they said nothing was wrong with it and sent it back. While my iPod was being sent back though, I got my hard drive on my computer serviced because of a memory dumping problem. When I got my computer and iPod back they both worked fine, so maybe there's something wrong with your hard drive.

Well after i posted the original question, i followed links and instructions to Restart The iPod Service via the following link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716. Nothing seemed to happen so i restarted my computer and plugged my iPod in and all appeared to be working. I then added a few new songs to my library and attempted to copy them to my iPod and the same old problem happened. So i dont know if i will have to repeat the instructions for restarting the iPod service every time i want to update my iPod but it has at least a more recent version of my library on it than before.

You might want to try this with your iPod and see what happens.

I have the issue noted above with my fiance's compaq laptop, her gateway desktop, and my homebrew desktop. All 3 have good drives in them, as per the drive check utilities put out by the different providers. I've been trying to figure this out all night, as she just bought the ipod the other night. I managed to misplace my 20 GB 4th gen, so I can't test it, but so far, her 5.5 gen is driving me nuts! anyone with any ideas needs to post them...the only thing i can think of is there is a major bug in the firmware...and I also noticed that when you click on the restore and it says it can't download the update, the picture is blank, and there is no data listed in the Ipod screen.

Ok, here's an update...

I unistalled the newest version of iTunes, went to oldapps.com, found a 7.0 version of iTunes, downloaded and installed it and tested the unit with no luck...after about the 30th try of different techniques, I disconnected the cable from the desktop, with the ipod still connected to the other end, and then reconnected it, and it connected fine, and brought up the Config the Ipod dialog box. After configuring it with a short name, I used hers, (Josie), it brought up the connected status in the iTunes source column. I then clicked on the "Enable Disk Use" and applied it. It's sitting here kicking thru all the files right now without a hitch (knocking on wood after that statement). I don't know how it worked, or why its suddenly working. I plugged it up to my other desktop about 20 minutes earlier (after i attempted to use the Ipod as a quick fix for a USB HDD, to install Fedora Core 6 on another machine, didn't work). The iso's were still on the pod when all this happened. Maybe it had something to do with the other files being on the pod that made itunes see it? I'm not certain, but it works now. Sorry I can't provide more info.
