Epson R2400 printer driver won't install?

I can't get my Epson R2400 printer to appear in the print dialog box in Photoshop on my MacPro. I have downloaded and run the appropriate file from Epson (11771.dmg) repeatedly to no avail, restarting the system each time. I cannot find any printer driver file when I run Find File on the keyword Epson.

I did not have this problem with my MacBook, however, which runs the printer just fine. Interestingly, Find File on the MacBook also does not identify any printer driver file.

Printer Setup Utility presents a dialog box that informs me no printer is installed, and asks if I want to add one. I click on ADD and am taken to a new dialog box, Printer Browser, which lists only one printer, 'E', a reference to the Epson R2400 on the FireWire (if I disconnect the printer, the listing for 'E' disappears). Select this and I am asked to 'Select a driver or printer model' from a list that includes many brand names including Epson. Select this and be taken to a list of Epson printers--the list that's part of OS X and does not include the driver I downloaded and installed.

I just can't think of anywhere to go from here. I get no help from Epson's FAQ for this printer, except the suggestion to download the non-Intel driver and tell Printer Setup Utility to "Open Using Rosetta", which produces likewise no discernible result, no printer, no printing.

I did not have this trouble with my MacBook and the very same driver for the R2400. It's as if there's a flaw somewhere in the Mac Pro's handling of printer drivers.

Have you tried hooking it up as USB? Reason I ask, I have been trying to get my 4000 to print through Windows Printing, and in the OS X Printing forums, somebody said Epson only writes their drivers for USB. I don't believe it, but there are several posts leading to which printers are supported by Intel Mac OS X. Finally got mine to print using another gimp driver, but what a waste of time. Seems many printer manufacturers spend most of their time on Windows.....

hritter,

I did a preview of the standard printers install on the Mac Pro. I don't see your R2400 nor did I see my R340. I nosed around and found where you have to reset the printing system in print utility, reboot and then install the correct driver (Intel) that you downloaded from the Epson website. I did for my R340 and now I'll play around with plugging it in to a port and see if I can do a local printer install. I will post back either way.

hritter,

OK, So I plug the thing in and hook it to USB. Try to use the darn Printer Setup Utility, and no matter what I did, no go. So, looking under About this Mac, there was the printer under USB. I thought about rebooting, but didn't want to. I had already installed the Intel driver, but I tried it again with the printer powered on and USB connected this time. After install, I went into System Preferences, Printing & Fax, said add a printer, and there it was in the list. I clicked add, and it populated back into the printer list. I ran the Epson Printer Utility in the Applications folder, it found it, said OK and a bunch of options popped up to play with.

Bottom line, don't install the drivers until the printer is hooked up and powered on. This is the exact opposite from Windows.

"I get no help from Epson's FAQ for this printer"

howard,
Epson Stylus Photo R2400 Support

Should be no need to initiate the use of your Mac's "Printer Setup Utility" - instead it should open automatically during the following:

Power on printer, connect to MacPro, go to System Preferences>Print & Fax>Printing and click on the [+] sign just below the left side's "In Menu/Printer" list which should be entirely empty beforehand. If not empty, first delete all entries. Clicking the [+] will open the Printer Setup Utility and the "Printer Browser" box will appear which will "discover" your printer if it is powered on and discoverable (connected) - then click its "Add" button and the Printer Setup Utility should close.

Your printer should then be listed in the above "Printing" preference panel's "In Menu/Printer" list. Double click and the printer application should open and you should be able to click the "Utility" icon at the top to the left of the "Supply Levels" icon and you should be able to setup your printer with a password, etc. [at least this is the way it works for my HP printer] If the first try doesn't get it working, don't be afraid to delete from the printer list and repeat the process. Will work the second try through the process. If it's a wireless printer, after setting it up with your password you can then disconnect the ethernet cable and connect via wireless.

I suppose the Epson setup might be somewhat different, but the idea should be the same. FWIW, it's the Tiger OS that handles the printing, not the MacPro, so for more detailed info check Tiger Support. Or, while the Print & Fax preference is open and front, open "Print & Fax Help" in the menu bar, or click on purple question marks. Good luck with it:)

Check. It's empty. [On my MacBook (OS X 10.4.8) it's occupied by "Stylus Photo R2400 (FW)"]

Clicking the [+]
will open the Printer Setup Utility

Check.

and the "Printer
Browser" box will appear

Check.

which will "discover" your
printer if it is powered on and discoverable
(connected)

Check--but the "Printer Name" appears as simply E and the connection as FireWire (correctly).

- then click its "Add" button and the
Printer Setup Utility should close.

Here's where I hit the problem: the Add button is dimmed and nonfunctional, even when the line 'E FireWire' is selected (highlighted). [I have no idea where the name 'E' comes from, although it appears the same way on my MacBook if I click on '+'.] And on the MacBook the Add button is also dimmed. As far as I recall, on the MacBook I had no troubles downloading and installing Epson's MacIntel driver for the 2400; when I first went to print after installing it, the 2400 appeared in the app's printing dialog box. Plug 'n' Play! Now it's Plug 'n' Shrug. The FireWire connection appears to be functional: if I unplug the printer, the line 'E FireWire' goes blank. And my scanner works fine thru this FireWire connector.

Your printer should then be listed in the above
"Printing" preference panel's "In Menu/Printer" list.

Needless to say, it isn't.

Now, I'll try a USB connection.

OK, lads, I just discovered another step, which worked.

After going to System Preferences > Print & Fax > Printing and clicking on the '+' button, having Printer Setup Utility start, and getting the Printer Browser window (where printer 'E' appears while the Add button remains dim), I tried clicking on the More Printers... button (stroke o' genius, what?) and down drops a 'windowshade' as if from underneath the Printer Browser title bar, with an upper dropdown menu showing 'Windows Printing', a lower dropdown menu showing 'Workgroup', an empty window with headers, and a Cancel button and a dimmed Add button. Curious, I click on the upper menu and get a whole range of selections, one of which is EPSON FireWire. I select this, and after a pause, the upper menu resets to EPSON FireWire and the lower menu disappears. Below the dropdown menu, the window now shows the name of my printer! I select it, and the Add button becomes active. I click it, and Stylus Photo R2400 (FW) is added to the Printer pane in the Print & Fax window.

I'm sure this is all covered somewhere in print, maybe in the Missing Manual for Tiger. I bought the **** thing, why am I only thinking now of looking at it?! Did I do all this with my Mac Book just 5 or 6 months ago? I don't think so! Maybe time for a neuropsychiatric test battery for Alzheimer's....

I just recently got a new Macbook Pro - my first mac computer - so I am new to all of this. I'm running OS X 10.4.8. I've having the same issue trying to set up my EPSON Stylus R2400 printer.

I find the appropriate driver on Epson the (epson11771.dmg) and I install it, and it says it was successful. When I go into System Preferences > Fax & Print, my printer appears in the list, along with Adobe PDF, but it does not allow me to click add. When I click on the "Print Using" dropdown to find the driver, I can not find my printer model or driver anywhere.

Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

If your printer appears by name (Stylus Photo R2400 FW) in the Print & Fax window, then it's installed and you should be able to print from an application, where it should appear as the selected printer in the print dialog box.

You will NOT find the driver listed in the "Print using" list even after installing the driver successfully. But it's not necessary to do so.

If the printer name appears in the Print & Fax window, but not in the Print dialog box of the application you want to print from, you might try going through the steps given in my post a couple of posts up from this (Feb 26 @ 8:37).

Welcome to Discussions hypernome!
As usual, the "Add" button will not be enabled for use until you have selected the item in the list. It may only be a list of one, but a selection must still be made. Once a selection has been made, the "Add" button will be clickable.
