I go to Mail (Version 2.1 (752/752.2)) to look at my old emails and I search for a given sender. His emails come up in the search. I click on one and I get this:

The message from John Baker <email address deleted by me for this post> concerning “Carbon emissions” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.

Why is this happening? What can I do to retreive my email?

THIS IS VERY BAD.

In fifteen years of using a Mac I have never had this problem. I sure as heck don't want this problem now.

It was impossible to have this problem before OS X and the Mail application was introduced by Apple.

Did you upgrade to Tiger from Jaguar or Panther on this Mac?

If so, this error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue that present to some extent before the upgrade/transfer process to Tiger Mail or this occurred during the upgrade to Tiger.

Tiger Mail uses a significantly different mbox filing structure than used with previous Mail.app versions and the upgrade/transfer process to Tiger Mail does not always work properly - especially if there were any underlying issues with an mbox file with the previous Mail.app version.
