Possible to disable "boot sound" on power up?

You do realize that the stratup sound or bong does serve a function. It indicates that the POST had been able to check your hardware and found it to be operational.

never had any problems with it. controls the volume of the startup sound. Of course you can even chose mute. And it works for intel macs too!

only the first solution in

is a good idea, because you do not want to mute the boot sound before shutdown, since it is useful in case of problems.

However, that solution - which worked well in my old PowerBook - does not work anymore in my new MacBook. So, what is the new way to do it ?!?
