trying to install Quicktime for Windows XP and iTunes...help!

I am working to set up iTunes and Quicktime on a brand new Dell laptop running Windows xp. I downloaded iTunes, when I try to open it I get a windows error message that it has to close. When I try to open Quicktime, I get an error message that the "plugin did not initialize properly" and "the plugin was found, but an error in the plugin has occured." I have also received the following error message when trying to launch Quicktime from the list of programs installed: "Quicktime failed to initialize error #-2095"
Thank you for trying to help me..I just want iTunes back!!
