AppleWorks error -600?

Had saved file numerous times due to AppleWorks unusual behavior - slowing down and cursor not where I put it. File is large, 300 pages. Was deleting a blank line and got the spinning wheel. Left it to do its thing; came back 5 minutes later and still spinning. Used FORCE QUIT, willing to loose the last few pages and get back to work.

Tried to open file and got: The Application "AppleWorks 6.app" could not be launched. error -600.

I cannot find anywhere a definition of errors and I desperately need help. The Recent Items file is empty.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Welcome to Apple Discussions

A search on Google for "Macintosh error codes" came up with a couple of sites (I stopped when I got the same description on two sites) that say "error -600 procNotFound: no eligible process with specified descriptor." Force quitting AppleWorks may have caused this. First troubleshooting step is to delete the AppleWorks preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more info.

This probably not due to the file itself, but the "Recent Items" bug. There are three user tips in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items., the first two by Dale Gillard & the third by Yvan Koenig
AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?

Recent items not visible/updated

No More Recent Items

The cursor not appearing where it really is can often by turning Fractional Character Widths on or off. Go to Preferences > General… > Topic: Text.

That error message means that the application wasn't completely quit. In this case, you will need to log out and back in, which can be done from the Apple menu, or by saving your work in other open applications and then using the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to quit the loginwindow process. In the second case, you may automatically be logged back in.

That specific error message can happen with any application, and appears to spontaneously occur when an application is force quit while it is displaying the spinning beachball.
