Print Setup Utility (10.4.8) mangles LPD queue name

The Print Setup Utility (under 10.4.8) uses the printer name as the LPD queue name, even if I enter a queue name. I tried to work around this behavior by giving the printer the same name as the queue (lp on192.168.123.254, as required by the Asante FR3004LC), but then the Print Setup Utility changes the periods to underscores.

How can I set the queue name to be what the Asante requires?

Both an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 and a G4 desktop running 9.2.2 can print to the printer, because their setup utilities allow me to enter the queue name.

In case anyone cares, the printer is an Apple LaserWriter Select 360 connected to the Asante router through the parallel port.

The queue name On The Mac and On The Print Server are completely unrelated. The queue name you enter in the Printer Setup Utility Add dialog is the only one that needs to be what they specify as the internal queue name on the Asante. The one you see on OS X after Adding is the one that you'd enter on some other computer, to print using LPD via the Mac as print server.

Okay, but that doesn't answer the question. The name of the print queue on the print server (Asante FR3004LC) is lp on192.168.123.254, and Apple's Printer Setup Utility from 10.4.8 will not accept that name, nor any name I enter in the Queue box. Instead, the queue is set to the Name, except that periods are changed to underscores, so that if I name the printer lp on192.168.123.254, the queue becomes lp on_192_168_123254 and it doesn't work.

I can later change the Name to what I would like, but I cannot change the Queue.

As I said, computers running 9.2.2 and 10.3.9 (although it was an earlier version of 10.3 when I set it up) can both print to the printer, and they specify the queue as lp on192.168.123.254.

Short answer: that doesn't work.

It's interesting that you should ask, since that is exactly what the router manual says to do. It led to much frustation as I tried to configure that 10.3 system back in 2004. I don't recall where I found the character string that made it work.

It isn't clear where you are asking about using just lp, since I could enter that character string as the Queue or the Name. In either case, the result is consistent with what I have previously reported. If I enter lp as the Queue, the queue is whatever I enter as the Name. If I enter lp as the Name, then the queue is named lp and it doesn't work, because the queue name must be lp on192.168.123.254.

To summarize the problem, the Printer Setup Utility ignores what I enter in the Queue block when I try to add a printer using LPD protocol, and it uses the Name as the queue but changes periods to underscores.

If I understand you correctly, then your OS X installation is corrupted.

But I want to re-state this - When I set up an LPD printer just now, I entered IP address of 192.168.1.8 and a queue name of "ps," the Mac created a queue name of 192_168_18. That's perfectly acceptable, because it has nothing to do with the queue name at the print server, which is "ps."

Short answer: the problem is solved.

What I did today, I am certain that I did at least twice before. (The second time was following one of your earlier posts.) It worked today, and I will not mess with it again until it stops working.

I created a new LPD printer, with the IP address of the print server and lp as the Queue, and it worked. The queue name in the Printer Info window, as before, was taken from the Name field, and so was not what I had hoped to see. Since it worked, I will adjust my hopes.

Thank you for your patience and help.
