Quicktime Icon with a Question Mark

I've been using quicktime for years and now when I go to some sites or try to download items I'll get the quicktime icon with a question mark in it. What is that and how do I fix it?

The most common problem is Flash. If you do not have the current free Adobe Flash Player software installed, download and install it. Once installed, you must tell the browser plug-in player to ignore the built-in QT Flash software (which only handles Flash 5 and below) and use the newly installed software instead. To do this, open the "QqickTime Preferences > Advanced > MIMI Settings > Misc." area and ensure the "Flash Media" option is deselected.

Er, well, it's a number of places, such as the embedded YouTube clip here.
I had no problem viewing, copying, and converting it to a an H.264/AAC "Baseline" file (not "fast started") which is located here:

http://homepage.mac.com/jrwalker4/.Public/White & Nerdy.mp4/

If you have QT Pro, use the "Open URL" option to view the file. (Don't try to access it directly since I kept the original filename with spaces and extension.) Would assume the problem is either in your system software or the manner in which you attempted to fix the problem.

I can see the clip fine if I actually go to YouTube. It seems that any YouTube clips embedded anywhere are doing that, though.
If you can view it properly when you go to YouTube then the plug-in is working properly and you need to explain what you are actually trying to do that is not working.

My "system software"? What does that mean?
In this case, I was referring to your browser plug-in which you now say is working properly.

Okay, it's just when the clip is embedded like it was there, or like it is here. I used to see this, but after going to the quicktime settings and unchecking that one box as per your suggestion, I now see this. Also, I think the same thing might be happening for some audio stuff, but I'm not positive, because the audio to which I thought it was happening has since been taken down. ...That was probably not a very helpful statement.

Hi,

I'm experiencing the very same problem and I was indeed adviced to install adobe flash player; it didn't work. I tried adjusting the quicktime settings, but when I go to MIME Setting, I simply get this completely blank window...Any ideas?
Thanks!

"but when I go to MIME Setting, I simply get this completely blank window."
Throw away ~/Library/Caches/QuickTime.

Pull the following files from ~/Library/Preferences
com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist
com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist
QuickTime Preferences
QuickTimeFavorites

Then restart.

If the above does not work, you will need to post back as a New Topic as your post does not pertain to the original post.

This way your issue can receive more focused attention rather than be buried in some one elses thread.

Hi!

I tried to do what you said about the preferences and all that and I couldn't find any of the files with the specific names you cited...There were some similar ones...
Does that mean I have a probem with the installation of quicktime?
Thanks for you help, it's greatly appreciated. As for starting a new post...I guess you're right, I'll do that. I still have the original problem with the question mark though...

Thanks again!
