I have an iMac 17" and want to use a larger external display ONLY

I bought a 17" iMac expecting to use my external 24" moniter only, but it doesn't seem to be possible... any help would be awesome.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Is that an Apple Cinema Display or other?

Go to: "System Preferences / Displays" click on: "Detect Displays" box!

Are there some sort of ATI drivers for my X1600 that are for the Mac? I know that when I go into Windows as a setting along with the ATI drivers I can tell it to only use my Dell display by pushing alt+F5 or only to use my iMac.

If your asking can you turn off the apple display in OS X, I don't think so.

Yeah I am trying to turn off the display completely and use only the external moniter. I know the ATI drivers on the Windows side let me so I was hoping there were drivers that let me on the Mac side...
