Nokia's new 6300.

Hi guys, I'm planning to get the new Nokia 6300 and am wondering where do we stand with all the compatibility. The phone isn't listed in Apple's compatibility list and I was wondering if there's any plugin out there to make things happen.

Basically, till now I have used Sony Ericsson mobiles and have, in general, been very happy with them. My current device is a w810i. All this I use the phone for:

· Address Book contacts (as far as I understand, the way Sony Ericsson syncs the address book with Tiger is the best one, whatever that means).
· iCal calendars.
· iCal To-do lists
· Send/Receive messages through Address Book.
· Start phone calls through Address Book.
· Salling Clicker has the ability to monitor the mobile events to pause/resume playing iTunes when a ph called is received and that sort of stuff.

In addition to that, I have seen that the memory card that goes within the 6300 is accessed removing the back cover, which I don't really like, so my question here is: Does anyone know if the USB port on the phone is high-speed? This, obviously would save me from removing the card every time in order to refresh the memory's music quickly.

All input is welcomed. Not sure if I'm starting this thread in the right forum as it involves iCal and Address Book but, since iSync has to do with both of them, I thought this one was the most appropriate.

Thanks in advance.

George...

If you've always been happy with Sony Ericsson phones, why are you considering switching?

The specification of the Nokia 6300 is almost identical to your current W810i, so I'm wondering why the need to change? Especially as Mac compatibility is lower and you've already noted some drawbacks to the Nokia.

www.novamedia.de have products that make the Nokia 6300 compatible with iSync 2.3 and Address Book, at additional cost.

Before switching to Nokia, take a look at the newer Sony Ericsson handsets, in particular the W880i and K810i (due out soon). Both will do all your W810i do, but with a higher specification.

Well... how can I answer that?

That phone I like because of its looks, to be honest. Additional reason is that, of the deal I'm getting from Carphone Warehouse, I'll keep the airtime for me for the length of the contract. If I'm satisfied with the phone itself, then I might enjoy it for some months, when my mom comes and visits me from Mexico, I'll give it to her. One good point about the Nokia phones is that their language can be changed to spanish (a must as my parents don't speak english). Giving the phone to my mom in a way solves any problems as their computers are PCs and there's no compatibility issues there, right?

So, spanish among the phone languages, and very important, the slenderness, that's why I'm after that phone.

Now, about SE...

If you're the master-mind behind mobile.feisar.com may I ask you something similar: Is there a way to add spanish language to those languages of the phone? If that was the case I could just buy any sexy Sony Ericsson mobile for my parents.

As a matter of fact I purchased a K610i which is, imho, the only Sony Ericsson mobile with good looks and decent dimensions (with all respect, the W880i can't be uglier), but I had to return it when I got to know that the USB interface was low-speed and I would be forced to remove the back cover to take off the memory stick to refresh the music externally.

Anyway here I have to mention that I purchased from mobile.feisar.com the appropriate plugin for the K610i.

And also I have to mention as well that thanks to mobile.feisar.com I got to put my old K750i (silver) and my current W810i to work with the Address Book to send and receive messages and calls. Not with the plugin that's now for sale, but with the instructions given before free of charge.

I think that's all. Thank you very much Julian.

Sony Ericsson phones can have their language changed too, along with the T9 dictionary.

The languages that are pre-installed in the phone are determined by the area of the world the phone is sold in.

You just need to use a third-party firmware flashing service on a Windows PC (the software isn't available for Macs), and choose the appropriate language pack.

I've used www.wotanserver.com to change the languages in my phones, using the supplied USB cable. A credit for these services is around £6

Other alternatives are www.davinciteam.com and www.totalserver.net

Thanks once again Julian, now, may I ask two more questions?

About this webstite (www.wotanserver.com) or any of the other 2...

When they say that the language would be changed, do they really mean "change"? I mean, can you not have two languages? I'm only interested in having spanish and english to use them alternatively.

The second question is, after replacing the phone's firmware, will I still be able to update the firmware from the Sony Ericsson "Update Service"?

Like I said, thanks again.

Each language pack has a number of different languages in it. However, all of them include English.

For instance, if you were to flash the 'K610 Generic Trade Spain' firmware from this page it would install the English, Portuguese, Spanish & French Languages and T9 Dictionaries.

Not all firmwares are available in all languages, especially the newer it is. Sometimes it takes a few weeks after the release of a newer firmware for all languages to be available.

You should be able to use SEUS after upgrading the firmware with Wotan. The only thing to be aware of is that sometimes the firmware available on SEUS is older than the one from Wotan, so if you use SEUS later, it may actually 'downgrade' your firmware (happened to me once!)

I think you can also change the languages only - without having to upgrade the whole firmware.

Done! Last night I loaded a different firmware onto my w810i and now I've got the languages I was interested in.

I'm indebted to you Julian, you packed your every response with a lot of help. I'm afraid though that the Nokia 6300 is on it's way to be delivered to my door. I'll keep it and learn/experiment with it as well.

I still don't know whether the 6300's USB port is high-speed or not but I suppose I'll find out soon.
