Failure to load playlist into ipod

Operating manually, my playlist in Itunes containing 2 CDs and tunes unchecked ( I understand that if they are checked, Itunes will revert to automatic),dragging the playlist to the ipod icon does not work. The playlist in the ipod already contains a few CDs. Does a playlist have a maximum capacity?

No, this is incorrect.
Checking or unchecking has nothing to do with auto or manual.
Why are they unchecked?

Is there a maximum memory for one playlist?
In one of the support sites that I visited, I understood it to say that any boxes left checked would revert the mode from manual to automatic and might empty my ipod. Did I get that wrong?

Yeah, I believe you got that wrong. Not really sure what it means.
Songs that are not checked will get skipped when playing and if you are in Auto mode, they will not get loaded onto the iPod (if set in the prefs).
