SMB - 15 character limit on server name?

Scenario: Using a SMB on a 10.4.8 XServe to allow server apps to access local shares in //servername/sharename/ form.

Had real problems until the length of the server name was reduced to less than 16 characters.

In the Mac's implementation of SMB, are there any limits on the length of the server name? also are spaces allowed in the name? Found it a bit hard to find documentation on this...

Regard

Mark

The SMB specification does place limits on things like this. While I don't know for sure, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find there to be a 16 character limit on server names.

I'm pretty sure that spaces are never allowed in Windows hostnames. AFAIK, AFP (the native Mac protocol) is the only common file sharing protocol that allows for spaces. However, the OS should automatically strip spaces if you've entered one.
