is Altiverb worth it?

I'll be the first to admit I'm a reverb junkie. I just discovered Altiverb 6 on www.audioease.com and I was pretty impressed with the demo movies. Now I already love logic's space designer tool, but Altiverb looks REALLY powerful.

Can i get any recommendations? Alternatives within the same price range? I dont need the XL version, so I'd probobly be looking at the $600 regular version.

thanks in advance

To a certain extent convolution engines are pretty straightforward, so the investment in Altiverb is more about the excellent impulses library you get access to than the plug itself, especially if you already own a "decent" convolution reverb such as Space Designer.

If you like what you hear and think the outlay is worth the benefit over what you already have, then by all means go for it...

Before you make the investment, there are some great sites on the web that have free IR's for the download. I don't love some of the IR's that come with space designer although some are pretty good. But if you take some time to sift through some of the freebies that you can download from say . . noisevault.com then I think you'll find what you need.

. . . or . . .

- now I'm not affiliated in any way with the people at quikquak software so I'm not trying to promote this product but I find that their Rayspace plug is fantastic. Since I bought it I don't use convolution verb anymore. Also check out the Classic Studio Reverb plug from IK multimedia. About half the price of altiverb - not convolution - but rumored to be AWESOME.

2 things to consider:

Altiverb runs native in 5.1; Space Designer doesn't. And Altiverb 5 is worth more than Altiverb 6; version 5 has all the quad IRs, to get them in version 6 you have to shell out a total of $1k to get "XL". Other than that, if you're just running in stereo, I would say go through the hundreds of Impulse Responses available on the web and use them in Space Designer...

For about $600, you can pick up a UAD-1 card from eBay, and ave enough
left over to buy the Plate 140 & Dreamverb

UAD plate gets a big shiny star from me. dreamverb gets a big booooo from me. tried it over and over, not only can I just not find what the fuss is all about sonically, but it has to win the lifetime adhievement award for the world's most hideous editor window design ever.
