DVD Burn fails (Error code 0x80020022), newish drive, just applied updates

Hello,

when i try to burn a data dvd with a variety of files from finder on my power mac g5 it thinks a while and then fails with the message:

Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed (Error code 0x80020022)

I just downloaded the latest OS updates last night.

Disc utility showed permissions problems in some files on my boot drive including in a darwin folder but they repaired fine.

Two weeks ago apple replaced my superdrive and i hadn't tried burning a dvd since then, but cds did and do burn fine.

This computer is under warrantee but in case the latest software updates caused this, or if someone has an easy fix that would allow me to save the trip to the store for analysis and potential couple day wait...

i'm all ears!
Thanks, Will

The software update would not have caused this. Is your data backed up? How much free disk space do you have? Are the discs you are attempting to burn known high quality DVDs according to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/ and prepackaged in jewelcases? Have the discs been labeled in any fashion? If they are spindle media, or they are labeled directly anywhere except the inner clear ring, that could cause them to be damaged enough to not be burnable. Also never burn at the maximum burn speed. Finally, don't attempt to multitask when burning. This error can happen due to any of these causes.

Thank you for your help!

At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.

My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.

I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.

without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

As i await my external drive to arrive in the mail so i can backup before taking my machine to the mac genius i have one further idea.

I am running OSX Server on this machine. I-Life won't install on OSX Server ( unless you force it too by trickery ) and too my knowledge, Apple has never publically said why this is the case.

Could it be because a later, ( as my old Dvd drive worked fine with iDVD), standard OEM DVD drives for my model just don't play with OSX server?

Thanks for the pointers over to the server discussion, i haven't found anything there on this issue, i'll try posting when i get a bit more time.

Coincidently last night i checked software updates and there was a new, 130MB large osx server update that mentioned devices and drivers. Now, after installing 10.4.9, my eject button on the keyboard doesn't pop the drive open, though toast eject control still works...

curiouser and curiouser!

It was the media!!

I finally got a third type: spindled imation dvd-r 8x, and they consistently work just fine.

The original OEM drive could burn my spindled hp dvd-r 16xs, but not this one!

I might have to buy 8xers online as they seem to be out of style say at staples, but maybe that means i can find them on sale...

I'll go register my findings at that site.

Thanks everyone for the help!
